How does BOTOX® work?
Over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, causing wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the skin's surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow's feet to form over time.
Normally when we squint, frown, or make other facial expressions, our nerves release a neurotransmitter chemical, known as acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter binds to receptors within the muscle to make it contract. Wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX® and DYSPORT® work by binding to the acetylcholine receptors, and blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles. After a muscle has been injected, the nerves still send the signal to the muscle to contract, and the acetylcholine is still released, but is unable to bind to the muscle, resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.
The binding process typically begins within about 48 hours from the time it is injected into the muscle, and results typically become noticeable within 7 to 10 days. While results are often most noticeable in dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear when a muscle contracts), it can also help soften wrinkles that are present even without muscle contraction.
If you're serious about improving the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, it may be just the right treatment option for you.
Is BOTOX® Safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved and injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced injector. It has proven to be a successful and valuable therapeutic protein when dosage, frequency of treatment and variety of treated clinical conditions are considered. The best way to ensure you receive the results you are looking for is to only receive injections from a highly experienced provider, such as the medical and nursing professionals at Ideal Image.
When will I see results?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours with the maximum effect visible at 30 days. Results may vary.
How long does BOTOX® last?
For most of our guests, the effects of the treatment can last anywhere from 3-6 months. Many factors can influence how long the effects last. As the product wears off, muscle action returns gradually, and the previously treated lines & wrinkles may begin to reappear, and need to be treated again. With repeated treatment, the lines and wrinkles often appear less severe than before, as the muscles are being trained to relax.
Some of these factors that may shorten or lengthen the effects include:
- Your age
- The condition of your skin and level of sun damage
- Your facial structure and expressions
- Your diet
- Whether or not you smoke
- Past experience with BOTOX® or other wrinkle relaxers
- And more...
Who Should Not Receive BOTOX®?
While most people aged 18 to 65 are excellent candidates for BOTOX® and wrinkle relaxers, you should not use BOTOX® if you meet any of the following:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a skin infection or other condition in the area to be treated
- Are allergic to any ingredients in BOTOX®, DYSPORT®, or any other botulinum toxin brand
- Have had facial surgery
- Have difficulty swallowing
- Have weakness in your forehead muscles
- And more...
If you have any concerns as to whether or not you may be a good candidate, one of our consultants will be happy to answer any questions you may have. With any medical procedures, it is best to discuss the procedure with your doctor before starting treatment.
